Sinfonia Christkönig starts with a concert dedicated to Mozart
Festive and expectant mood in the fully booked Chriskönig-church in Linz. Last Sunday the Sinfonia Christkönig Orchestra under Eduard Matscheko started the new season with a programme that was solely dedicated to Mozart and celebrated an anniversary, because the orchestra whose origins date back to 2001, has revelled the patronage of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra for 10 years. The patronage was recently renewed owing to its obvious dedication and quality of performance.
The programme started with a premiere: „Mozartiana III“ by Claudia Federspieler for clarinet and orchestra. The solo-part was played by the brilliant and open-minded musician Matthias Schorn, First Clarinetist of the Vienna Philharmonic. The three-movement-work, played attaca, is an imaginative and original homage to Mozart, which follows similar ventures by Tschaikowski and Balduin Sulzer. It carries the charming thumbprint of the composer in a kind of musical palimpsest, which allows the traces of the prominent forerunners to show through but is an independent , entertaining work in the best sense of the word.
It was followed by Mozart’s symphony in C-Major, Nr 34, KV 338 swiftly and energeticly presented, which was composed approximately at the same time as the „Haffner“ and „Pariser“ symphonies. Slightly less brilliant – the dominance of brass ensemble, probably due to the acoustics in the church. Finally the highlight: Mozart s Clarinet Concerto in A-Major, KV 622. The way in which Matthias Schorn lets the solo part flourish in all its facets can be called absolutely unique. Technically unequaled, he savors the whole dynamic and melodic spectrum with the seemingly playful ease that distinguishes true mastership. The orchestra provides a subtle, sensitive basis under Eduard Matscheko‘s elegant and purposeful conducting. Enthusiastic applause and standing ovations.
