Last Sunday the Sinfonia Christkoenig orchestra started its 8th season under the patronage of the Vienna Philhamonic Orchestra.
It was a great success and the church was almost too small to hold the big number of visitiors. The church that gives the name to the orchestra is an attractive performance venue with its special acoustics in particular. It is also tempting and an honour to perform together with a soloist of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, who love to play with Eduard Matschekos ambitious orchestra.
It was the second time that Solo flutist Karl-Heinz Schütz played in the Friedenskirche and he managed to present Carl Reinecke’s not really attractive flute concerto as highly virtuosic masterpiece. The Leipzig composer and conductor of the Gewandhaus Orchestra was supported by Mendelssohn Bartholdy and was friends with Robert Schumann. Their influence is notable in his works. [ ….]
At the end Matscheko conducted Schubert’s concise 5th Symphony B-major D 485 for the sake of coherence the Sinfonia Orchestra played this work with absolute perfection. Matscheko encouraged his orchestra to play at its highest level of performance. Instead of an encore Matscheko – as his disciple – paid tribute to Balduin Sulzer, who had died recently, by dedicating a movement of one of his symphonies to him. Therefore the final applause could break loose only after a minute’s silence.
